Newcastle have been pursuing the signing of Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin for what seems like an eternity, but the Get French Football website claim that a deal is reportedly close.

Signing a winger has been a priority for Steve Bruce, and became even more urgent when Matt Ritchie had to leave the field with a hamstring injury at Hibernian on Tuesday.

The article reports Lee Charnley as being on the French south coast to finalise the deal, which will be for €18 million, with added bonuses to be inserted.

News that Watford were also interested in signing the player may have expedited the deal, with Newcastle not wanting to miss out on one of their priority targets.

Lee Charnley is too slow to get deals completed

All this could have been avoided, however, if Charnley had just made an acceptable offer from the outset. But that, of course, is not the Charnley way.

With under a week before the end of the transfer window in England, Newcastle cannot afford to be messing about over fees any longer, with getting players in being essential.

Toon fans are not convinced that Charnley will be getting the deal done, and are eager to point to his past record of failure as their reasoning.
