Ademola Lookman is Newcastle’s most sensible target so far

From Nikola Kalinic to Glenn Murray, Newcastle have finally been linked with a sensible signing this January.

According to Sky Sports, the Magpies are interested in a loan move for RB Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman. The deal would also include an option to buy at the end of the season.

After previously starring on loan, Lookman’s permanent move to the Bundesliga hasn’t quite gone to plan. Leipzig paid Everton £22 million for the youngster, but he’s struggled to get a game in Germany. He’s made just four appearances in all competitions, playing a grand total of 200 minutes.

While four appearances isn’t many, Toon fans shouldn’t read too much into it. Leipzig are having a sensational season, currently sitting top of the Bundesliga while reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League. There’s a lot of quality at the club, meaning there’s no shame in Lookman not being able to get a game.

Lookman could be a perfect addition

And he’s exactly what Newcastle need. Our lack of depth offensively has been massively exposed over Christmas, with an over-reliance on Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron being laid bare for all to see.

Lookman would add extra quality out wide, an area where we’ve struggled. Christian Atsu blows tepid and cold, while it’s likely that Matt Ritchie will remain in defence.

We can’t rely ASM and Miggy. We need other options. Lookman has proven in the past that he has the natural ability, he just needs minutes to fully make his mark on senior football. He’s an excellent dribbler with raw pace, which should suit Steve Bruce’s counterattacking system brilliantly.

There are other areas we need to improve in January, including up front, but adding extra quality out wide is a must.

If Lookman doesn’t impress, we don’t have to sign him. But with a bit of luck, he could have a similar impact to Jetro Willems, whose loan deal will likely become permanent in the summer.

Amidst the January madness, Lookman would be a sensible signing for the Magpies.
