Newcastle United have been without their starting goalkeeper for a while now with Nick Pope picking up an injury at the start of December.
Since then, Newcastle have really struggled to keep the ball out of their own net with current shot-stopper Martin Dubravka coming under a lot of criticism lately.
There had been rumours that they were looking at Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili as a possible long-term replacement and a new report from Estadio Deportivo is now claiming that he’s going to be moved on in the summer.
Newcastle face tough battle for star goalkeeper
Things will be difficult for Newcastle to make this move regardless given that he is believed to have an £85m release clause in his contract and it’s well known now that the Magpies are hindered by financial restrictions.
However, there are also a number of other Premier League clubs who are interested in signing the 23-year-old which makes life even harder for Newcastle should they want the move.
Given that they have Pope returning from his injury in April, it does feel like improving the goalkeeper is very low on Newcastle’s list of priorities, but it could secure their shot-stopper for the next decade.
Pope has proved he’s more than capable of being a quality keeper in the Premier League and it would be a big surprise to see the Magpies spend what would likely be most of their budget on a replacement.

Newcastle desperate to get Pope back
Not only will Pope want to be getting back as soon as possible for one final push to prove that he should be selected by England this summer, Newcastle are also in desperate need of their starting goalkeeper.
Pope often goes under the radar because he’s not exactly comfortable with the ball at his feet, so most fans believe he’s not good enough to be a top keeper, but his absence has been hugely felt at Newcastle.
It’s not just his unbelievable shot-stopping ability that Newcastle miss so much, it’s also his aerial presence and his sweeping ability which the defenders had actually relied on so heavily.
Time and time again Dubravka looks to be glued to his line and it just goes to show how much that Pope actually does that outsiders won’t realise unless they watch Newcastle games week in week out.
