Newcastle United are interested in signing James Maddison from Leicester City, who could be playing Championship football next season.
That is because Leicester suffered another defeat on Monday. Maddison and co were beaten 5-3 by Fulham, leaving them in the relegation zone with three games to play.
The Foxes are 18th in the Premier League, two points adrift of Everton, who smashed Brighton 5-1 at the Amex Stadium.
Monday was a huge day in the race to avoid relegation, and it was Leicester and Southampton who were the biggest losers.
The Foxes’ defeat was particularly crushing. Their loss at Craven Cottage would have been even more humiliating had it not been for two late goals that reduced the deficit.
Maddison and Harvey Barnes scored to make it 5-3 rather than 5-1, but the defeat plunges Leicester even closer to relegation.
James Maddison apologises to Leicester fans
After the game, Maddison was critical of his team. He believed that they were not aggressive enough on the pitch, which resulted in Fulham rolling them over with ease. The 26-year-old has since taken to Twitter to apologise to fans.
He wrote: “We were not good enough today and we’ve only got ourselves to blame and apologise for that. But as someone who sees the work we are doing every single day to try and put this right, it’s not down to attitude or application. We will keep going until the very end.”
Newcastle target could be relegated
Not many would have predicted it at the start of the season, but Leicester remain one of the favourites to go down with three games to go.
It hasn’t been for the lack of trying from Maddison, who is enjoying a brilliant campaign. He has scored 10 goals and provided nine assists. It is obvious that Leicester would be much worse off without him.
That could become a reality next season, with a move away looming. Regardless of relegation, Maddison looks set to leave the King Power Stadium.
He is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United, who have been chasing him since last summer. It has been claimed that a switch to St James’ Park could tempt the midfielder, although a transfer to Tottenham is apparently the most likely outcome right now.
Whoever does get Maddison will reportedly have to pay around £50million, but that could always change if Leicester drop down to the Championship. If that does happen, he will almost definitely be sold.
