Newcastle United will soon know whether or not they will be signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this month.
The Magpies’ interest appears to be at a standstill, with Eddie Howe’s side stepping back from a deal as Manchester City refuse to soften their stance.
They are looking for a sizeable loan fee in the region of £7million, while they also want any deal to include an obligation to buy in the summer.
Those demands are not going to work for Newcastle, who were previously confident about signing Phillips, who is keen on a move to St James’ Park.
But that confidence has disappeared, at a time when Eddie Howe is desperate to bring in another midfielder. His squad has became even more depleted due to Joelinton’s season-ending injury, with Atalanta’s Ederson lined up as a potential alternative to Phillips.
It is absolutely clear that Phillips needs to leave Manchester City this month, and, whether he joins Newcastle or goes somewhere else, it looks like his future could be decided very soon.

Newcastle will know next week if they are signing Kalvin Phillips
According to the Telegraph, there is hope that Phillips’ Manchester City future will be sorted out next week. A decision looks like it is on the horizon, with Newcastle still in contention for the midfielder’s signature.
But the Telegraph have thrown some more clubs into the mix. They believe that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are interested.
The report states that Phillips is attracting interest from at least six clubs, so it looks like he is not going to be shy of suitors over the coming days with his future set to be thrashed out.
Whether he joins Newcastle or not, it is essential that this is sorted out as soon as possible. The sooner it is, the sooner the Magpies can begin to integrate him into the squad, or the sooner they can focus on an alternative.
It is difficult to judge which way this is going to go, but at least a conclusion to this transfer saga is suddenly not too far away.
