Swansea City seem to be keen on taking Newcastle United’s January signing Harrison Ashby on loan next season.

The former West Ham youth Harrison Ashby arrived at Newcastle in January 2023 with a heap of expectation on his shoulders driven by the Hammers fans who claim he’s going to be a huge player in the future.

Since his arrival, however, he has trained with the Under 21s and hasn’t made a senior competitive appearances for the Magpies despite being named on the bench for the final two games of the season.

Eddie Howe faces a decision over what to do with Ashby next season

His immediate future is uncertain as to whether Eddie Howe wants to keep him around to keep an eye on his development and as a back-up for Kieran Trippier should anything happen to him. The other option is he goes out on loan to get some regular playing time.

With this in mind it looks like Swansea City would be keen to take Ashby off Newcastle’s hands on loan according to Tom Coleman of Wales Online who Tweeted: “As for Swansea City. Newcastle’s Harrison Ashby an option that’s very much on the radar.”

As Newcastle are searching for a versatile full-back and as such it may not be as much of a requirement to keep Ashby hanging around as a “just in case”. If that’s the case then the club should let the youngster go out in search of regular football to further development.

Ashby has what it takes to force his way into Newcastle’s first team

Personally, I’d like to see him in the first-team this year so we can see what all the hype is about. He had that one game for the Under 21s where he and Ryan Fraser linked up brilliantly in a 4-3 win over Norwich.

We will have plenty of need to rotate players with the extra fixtures due to our Champions league involvement and hopefully another decent cup run.

Ashby could find himself breaking through to the first team if the club fail to land another full-back in the transfer window.
