Newcastle United are no strangers to signing players from relegated Premier League clubs.

It is something they have done a lot since Eddie Howe arrived at St James’ Park.

The likes of Nick Pope, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes all joined Newcastle United after dropping out of the Premier League, and it is a tactic that Toon officials could use again in 2025.

Ipswich Town are facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation, despite the efforts of Liam Delap up front.

No matter what happens to Ipswich, the £20million attacker appears destined for a move away from Portman Road after his performances in the top flight.

Newcastle United eye Liam Delap as Champions League race continues

Newcastle are looking at Delap, as they prepare to sign a striker once the summer transfer window opens.

The Manchester City academy product would be a welcome arrival at St James’ Park, but Newcastle striking a deal may depend on where Eddie Howe’s side finish this season.

According to the i Paper, Newcastle United have been told by Delap that his preference is to join a club in the Champions League.

The same goes for Dean Huijsen and Johan Bakayoko, who the i Paper describe as the Magpies’ ‘ambitious’ transfer targets heading into the summer.

Champions League is pivotal for Newcastle United despite Carabao Cup win

Every player wants to compete in the Champions League. Delap is no different, and that is where he is hoping to end up after scoring 10 goals in his first ever Premier League season.

The youngster has done very well for Ipswich, and he is the kind of striker that Newcastle should be targeting as Eddie Howe aims to add more depth to his forward line.

But for that deal to become a reality, the Magpies might need to be in the Champions League. That is still a possibility, with qualification in Newcastle’s hands with 10 games to go.

Newcastle’s summer is going to be dictated by what European competition they qualify for. If it is the Champions League, multiple avenues will open up.

The club will see their revenue rise, while sponsorship deals will become more lucrative. Better players will be interested in joining, while Howe’s current stars will be inclined to stay.

Newcastle want Alexander Isak to sign a new contract, but that will surely only happen if they are a Champions League club heading into next season.
