Newcastle United missed out on signing Filip Jorgensen in 2024, but his move to Chelsea hasn’t gone to plan.
Nick Pope has been Newcastle United’s first-choice stopper for some time now, but he has faced new competition in recent times.
Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived from Nottingham Forest in 2024, before Aaron Ramsdale came in from Southampton this past summer.
Vlachodimos has already moved on loan to Sevilla, while Ramsdale could step in for Pope as he looks to earn a permanent deal.
Newcastle were also keen on Filip Jorgensen before Vlachodimos arrived, but he headed elsewhere in England.
Who has been Newcastle United’s signing of the summer?
Filip Jorgensen now seeking Chelsea departure after Newcastle United interest
Jorgensen impressed for Villarreal and actually signed a new deal with the La Liga side in June 2024.
Despite committing his future to Villarreal until 2029, Jorgensen was on the move just over a month later.
Chelsea signed Jorgensen for £21million, securing the Danish stopper as competition for Robert Sanchez.
Jorgensen has struggled to make an impact in West London, playing just seven times in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old has little chance of displacing Sanchez and could now leave Stamford Bridge after seeing his move to London go badly wrong.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Jorgensen is considering leaving Chelsea for a January loan move.
Jorgensen wants more playing time and may make a temporary exit in order to feature elsewhere.
Newcastle certainly won’t be involved in that particular transfer race, and the Magpies may have had a lucky escape after Jorgensen’s lack of impact at Chelsea.

Newcastle United face Aaron Ramsdale decision in 2026
Jorgensen is likely to be off Newcastle’s radar now, having failed to really impress during his time at Chelsea.
Eddie Howe does face goalkeeping decisions in 2026, though, with Ramsdale set to shape Newcastle’s approach.
Ramsdale could join permanently from Southampton, but he must prove to Howe that he is worth signing full-time.
Ramsdale impressed against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, though he has yet to start a Premier League game.
Howe’s connection to Ramsdale from their time together at Bournemouth means that a permanent deal looks to be a real possibility.
Ramsdale must still prove his worth, though, and Newcastle will have other goalkeepers in mind just in case another stopper is needed.
