Newcastle United celebrate Christmas Day in the top half of the Premier League table.
As we approach the halfway point of the 2024/25 season, Newcastle United remain in the race for European qualification despite an underwhelming start to the campaign.
Eddie Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season in what is his third year at the club under PIF. He is still in contention to achieve that goal with Newcastle in eighth place and now just two points off the top six.
Silverware is also up for grabs with Newcastle reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Newcastle have reached Christmas Day with 26 points with a record of seven victories, five draws and five defeats after Saturday’s 4-0 win over Ipswich Town.
Since the PIF takeover in 2021, here are Newcastle’s Premier League positions at Christmas.

Christmas 2023 – 7th
This time last year, Newcastle were struggling to balance their workload between the Premier League and Champions League.
Howe was handling an injury crisis at the club as a result of midweek fixtures in Europe.
Newcastle sat seventh in the table at Christmas, seven points off the top four and 11 off league leaders Arsenal.
The Magpies ended up finishing in that same position at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

| Newcastle United | 7th | 18 | 29 | +14 |
Christmas 2022 – 3rd
Newcastle’s first full season under Howe was a rollercoaster for fans with the Magpies up in third at Christmas time.
The Magpies had only lost one of their first 15 matches in the league, with eight victories and six draws.
The 30 points collected by Newcastle meant they were only seven off Arsenal at the top of the table and two away from eventual champions Manchester City.
Of course, Newcastle achieved Champions League qualification in the 2022/23 season, securing a return to the prestigious competition for the first time in 20 years.

Christmas 2021 – 19th
Howe was appointed Newcastle manager in November 2021 and just a month later the Magpies spent Christmas in 19th position.
It shows just how far Newcastle have come under Howe and PIF.
After 18 games, Newcastle had only won once, leaving them with a miserable tally of 10 points on Christmas day.
Remarkably, Howe guided Newcastle to an 11th-placed finish in 2021/22, with a miraculous turnaround after the turn of the year.
