Newcastle United are enjoying their best run of form of the season and will be hoping to give supporters an extra Christmas present on Boxing Day.
The last week was a fantastic one for Newcastle United, as they won all three of their games with an aggregate score line of 11-1.
Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy have dazzled in consecutive 4-0 victories in the Premier League over Leicester and Ipswich, while Eddie Howe’s side are also into the final four of the Carabao Cup after defeating Brentford.
There are still two fixtures to go in 2024 to end an inconsistent year on an even brighter note, with the Magpies welcoming Aston Villa to St. James’ Park on Boxing Day.
The day after Christmas hasn’t been a good one for Newcastle in recent years having won just once in the last five attempts but hopefully that changes this time around.
Here are the club’s last five Boxing Day results.

December 26, 2023 – Newcastle United 1-3 Nottingham Forest
It was the case of a ghost of Christmas past last year for the Magpies, when their former striker Chris Wood helped himself to a hat-trick at St James’ Park, following his permanent move to Forest that summer.
Wood became only the fourth player in Premier League history to bag a treble against a former side, following Andy Cole, Marcus Bent and Joshua King.
Isak had put Howe’s side ahead from the penalty spot midway through the first half, but it was Wood’s hat-trick, scored over 15 minutes between the interval that was the story of the day, as Newcastle suffered their first home defeat to Forest in the league since October 1988.
December 26, 2022 – Leicester City 0-3 Newcastle United
A surging Newcastle side moved up to second in the Premier League table on Boxing Day 2022 as they claimed a sixth win on the bounce when they swept aside Leicester City 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.
Chris Wood got the ball rolling with a third-minute penalty befoe Miguel Almiron and Joelinton struck to give the Magpies a three-goal cushion at the half-time break.
The Boxing Day win was a high-point in the team’s five-and-a-half month unbeaten Premier League spell, on which the foundations of their return to the top four and participation in the following season’s Champions League were built.
December 27, 2021 – Newcastle United 1-1 Manchester United
United were entrenched in the bottom three during the 2021 festive period, eagerly awaiting the first transfer window under the new PIF regime.
Howe was beginning to turn the ship around though and a 1-1 draw against a Manchester United side containing Cristiano Ronaldo that came after three consecutive defeats was a key result that season.
Allan Saint-Maximin put the Magpies 1-0 up inside ten minutes, with the Red Devils needing a late equaliser from substitute Edinson Cavani to earn a share of the points.
The draw marked the beggining of a nine-match unbeaten run for Howe’s side who quickly worked their way up the table before evenuntaly finishing 11th,
December 26, 2020 – Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United
Newcastle United headed to Etihad having lost their last 11th away league fixtures against Manchester City, a run they were unable to snap in an an empty stadium during the Covid-19 pandemic.
City were on their way to reclaiming their Premier League that season and goals from Ferran Torres and Ilkay Gundogan were enough to ease past a Steve Bruce side that mustered just 24 per cent possession in what would be the third game of a nine-match winless spell for the Magpies.
December 26, 2019 – Manchester United 4-1 Newcastle United
Steve Bruce’s men endured another tough Boxing Day clash in Manchester five years ago, suffering a heavy defeat at Old Trafford.
The Magpies started well, when 19-year-old Matty Longstaff scored against Manchester United for the second time that season in the 17th minute. By half-time, the hosts were 3-1 up though, with Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all netting before the break.
Martial added another after the interval, to maintain Bruce’s record of never having won at Old Trafford as a manager.
