Newcastle United fans have been reacting to a claim from Daniel Jowell QC today that the Premier League threatened the club with expulsion from the competition.
Today was the jurisdiction hearing for Newcastle’s Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) case.
It is the anti-competition lawsuit Mike Ashley filed earlier this year.
A three-man panel are determining whether there is enough evidence in Ashley’s claim to warrant whether the case should be heard.
A judgement on the matter will be revealed in due course, with no time-frame set by Mr Justice Miles.
One of the biggest things to emerge from an intense afternoon was sports lawyer Jowell saying the Premier League had threatened the Magpies with expulsion from the competition.
He said: “Notwithstanding its threats, the Premier League hasn’t carried through its threat to stop the club from participating in the competition.”
On social media, fans have been giving their reactions to the explosive revelation.
Quite a few people have been making the point that earlier this year, six teams were going to leave the Premier League to join a European Super League.
It was a move that would have destroyed English football, with intense fan pressure eventually resulting in all six clubs performing U-turns.
Those sides essentially all got a slap on the wrist and were allowed to choose their own punishments. They all agreed to a £22 million combined fine (via The Times).
Here’s what some Toon fans have said following the comments from Jowell:
When you consider the punishment (or lack there of!) the ‘big 6’ got for trying to destroy & leave the @premierleague it really is a little frustrating to think that they might have threatened to expel #NUFC over a disputed takeover. Remarkably double standard. #NUFCTakeover

Threatened to kick us out league for wanting the takeover.. yet the ESL 6 get a slap on wrist for potentially ruining English football.
Question should be.
Thoughts English football fans?

No way the Premier League threatened to lick Newcastle out of the Premier League for feeling unfairly treat but nothing for the big 6 trying to ruin the football pyramid 👍

I hope the media highlight that they have threatened to expel Newcastle United from the #PremierLeague when 6 clubs weren’t given a points deduction for facilitating a rival to the #PremierLeague #NUFC
