Newcastle players with most red cards in Premier League era

Newcastle United have had their fair share of red cards in the Premier League.

Whether it was for horrible tackles, second yellow cards or fighting on the pitch, a plethora of Toon players have been sent for an early bath.

The Magpies have received two red cards this season (2020/21), both for two yellow cards.

The first was Ryan Fraser, who was sent off during the embarrassing defeat to Sheffield United. Then Jeff Hendrick was booked twice as his teammates clung on for a huge win over Southampton.

Those were Fraser and Hendrick’s first red cards for Newcastle, joining an illustrious list of players who have let ill-discipline get the better of them.

But who has been sent off the most for Newcastle in the Premier League? Well, four players share the record of four reds each.

Fabricio Coloccini, 4 red cards

Former Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini is the only Toon player to receive four straight reds.

While other players in this list have been punished for multiple offences, Coloccini never picked up two bookings in a game for the Magpies.

The Argentinian’s straight reds came against Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool, Everton and Sunderland.

Steven Taylor, 4 red cards

Steven Taylor received four red cards in his Premier League career, but only two of them were straight reds.

However, one of them was arguably the most comical sending off in Newcastle history.

It came back in 2005 in a 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

The Magpies were already down to nine men after Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer were sent off for fighting with each other.

With Villa looking to pick Newcastle off on the break, Taylor saved a shot on the line with his hand.

In an attempt to get away with it, the defender held his chest as if he’d been struck down by a rifle up in the stands.

The referee didn’t buy it, however, and brandished his third red card of the day.

David Batty, 4 red cards

David Batty is one of football’s great enigmas. An incredible player who just didn’t really like football that much. He was just good at it.

He is one of four players to be sent off four times in the Premier League for Newcastle.

He got two yellows on three separate occasions, which is impressive considering he only spent two full seasons at St James’ Park.

Nikos Dabizas, 4 red cards

Nikos Dabizas could have had 40 red cards for Newcastle, but he still would be remembered for one moment and one moment only.

The Greek defender is a cult hero at St James’ Park, thanks to a derby day winner back in 2002.

Dabizas scored the only goal against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, cementing his legacy at the club no matter how many times he got sent off.

But for the record, it was four.
