What the experts say: Newcastle vs Wolves

Newcastle look to bounce back from their defeat against Chelsea, with another difficult looking game against an in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are unbeaten in their last seven games across all competitions, having made a struggling start to the season.

Steve Bruce will hope to make the most of any tired legs that may be in the Wolves team, due to them playing an away game in the Europa League on Thursday.

The pundits and journalists have been having their say, and here are what they are predicting for this weekend’s game.

Lawrenson thinks Newcastle will “owe them one” when recalling Wolves’ controversial last-gasp win at St James’ Park last season, predicting a slim home win.

He said: “Newcastle owe them one, and I think they will come out on top here – just.”

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Wolves

Nicholas suggests Wolves struggle when playing not playing against “bigger teams”, and sides that “defend deep” and make it “awkward” for them.

He also adds Newcastle have a dilemma whether to attack, or play a counter-attacking game.

He warns: “Steve Bruce will know he has to be careful. Newcastle are better deployed sitting in and are better suited playing two up front but they cannot really do that, so it will be another struggle of a game.”

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

Lee Ryder – Chronicle

The Chronicle’s chief football writer thinks fatigue could be a factor for the visitor, but warns “it’s not a guarantee”.

He adds: “Confidence isn’t too bad from a United point of view but they have to start doing much more in the final third.

“It’ll be a tough encounter this weekend but I think Newcastle can take the three points.”

Prediction: Newcastle win

Robbie Savage joins the other experts in predicting that Newcastle will not lose the game against Wolves, who have had to travel across Europe in the build-up to Sunday’s meeting.

He does not think there will be many goals – a safe assumption when Newcastle are playing nowadays.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-0 Wolves

Paul Nicholson – GBB writer

It will be a tough game for Newcastle, who are taking on a team oozing confidence right now.

As much as I hope there will be after-effects of their Thursday night Europa League game, their 2-0 win away at Manchester City following a previous trip to Turkey suggests it will not be the case.

Newcastle’s fate will be largely determined by Steve Bruce’s team selection and subsequent tactics. If he is bold and plays a more attacking style, while not over-committing, I think there will be a positive result.

Unfortunately, I think Bruce will opt for more of the same, meaning a draw could be the best we can hope for.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

James Rutherford – GBB writer

This is a really tough one to predict. Wolves have picked up in recent weeks, but did face a lengthy Europa League journey on Thursday night. As for the Mags, who knows what to expect.

With Schar out, it’s hard to see us keeping a clean sheet. And scoring more than once seems impossible for Newcastle, so I’ll go for a draw, with Joelinton getting his first SJP goal.
