Attentions will soon turn to the next deal once Newcastle get Kieran Trippier over the line.
The Magpies are closing in on their first January signing, agreeing a £12million fee for the 31-year-old. He’s reportedly due on Tyneside today to complete a medical.

Newcastle reportedly want to add a left-back, two centre-backs, a centre-midfielder and striker before the window closes on January 31st. But what should be their next priority?
Newcastle must follow Kieran Trippier deal with centre-back move
The big issue at Newcastle right now is the defence. We’ve been rotten at the back this season. After 19 games, we’ve conceded 42 goals – the joint worst alongside Norwich.
Trippier will certainly strengthen us at the back, but the big issue is at the heart of the defence. And that’s why Newcastle need to move for a centre-back after the Trippier deal is completed.
While the Telegraph have claimed that the Magpies may press ahead with a deal for Lucas Digne next, the need for a central defender is much more immediate.
Sven Botman has been rumoured, while there remains talk of James Tarkowski moving to St James’ Park. Regardless, Newcastle need at least one but preferably two centre-backs.
Our current options have all struggled at points this season. Jamaal Lascelles isn’t the player he once was, while Fabian Schar doesn’t suit playing in a back four. Ciaran Clark has made cataclysmic errors in recent weeks, then you’ve got the out of favour Federico Fernandez.
In contrast, the need for a left-back isn’t as pressing – despite the tantalising prospect of Digne arriving.
Paul Dummett is back in training, while Jamal Lewis could be back to full fitness soon. You’ve also got Javi Manquillo and Matt Ritchie who can play as left-back. But our central options are poor, and need improving sooner rather than later.
With Trippier on his way, we ideally need a centre-back to quickly follow him ahead of the next Premier League game against Watford on January 15th.
