We are on the brink of the January transfer window opening and it could well be an exciting month for Newcastle United.
Given the current run of form and the injury crisis affecting Newcastle United, we’ve every reason to believe reinforcements will be added in January.
Who is Newcastle’s best ever January signing? ✍
In fact, it’s thought PIF could sanction up to £100m of spending with three signings earmarked for Eddie Howe in the new year.
But, what does Howe actually need and want? Well, we’ve looked almost 30 years back into the past and realised that Newcastle made exactly the kind of signing Howe should be eyeing up in 2026.

Didier Domi was a great signing for Newcastle United
Admittedly, Newcastle haven’t spent much in January during the PIF era. In fact, Anthony Gordon is the only big name, big money acquisition they’ve made in the winter window.
But, rewind to 1998 and we saw the Magpies splash out around £4m on Didier Domi, with the defender arriving from PSG on 30 December.
The Frenchman came through the PSG academy before spending almost exactly two years in England with Newcastle. He then returned to PSG in January 2001 for pretty much the same fee.
While that may seem like an odd bit of business, Newcastle did get 70 games, four goals, and six assists out of Domi before getting their money back. Not a bad deal, all things considered.

Eddie Howe needs his own Didier Domi in January
In many ways, getting someone like Didier Domi in the upcoming transfer window would be ideal for Eddie Howe and Newcastle.
Domi was a really solid, if a little unremarkable, left-back who was physical, decent on the ball, and gave his all on the pitch. We know Howe wants a full-back in January; someone who can compete with and provide cover for the likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
Finding someone to come in and sit behind top players is difficult, but Domi was the kind of player who knew his role and did his job 100% of the time. If Howe could recreate that type of signing next month — cheap, reliable, experienced — he would be a very happy man indeed.
