Tottenham’s Champions League disaster takes the shine off Bruce’s only Newcastle win

Newcastle were embarrassed on Sunday against Leicester. On Tuesday night, Tottenham Hotspur suffered their own humiliation.

Spurs were smashed 7-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with former Gunner Serge Gnabry scoring four. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are enduring something of a crisis, struggling in the Premier League and in Europe.

Things are so bad, they even lost to us!

The Magpies have won just once this season, a 1-0 victory away to Spurs in the sweltering August heat. Joelinton scored the only goal of the game, and it looked like it could be the start of something under Steve Bruce.

But more than a month since, it looks nothing but a false dawn. Tottenham’s form since that defeat has been woeful. Bayern are an amazing side, but a team like Spurs should never concede seven in one game. That’s something even Newcastle haven’t done since 2012!

Tottenham fans are obviously concerned with their form. But for Newcastle fans, all it’s done is cheapen Bruce’s one and only win as manager.

Initially it looked like a defining performance of Bruce’s tenure as Newcastle boss. We scored a great goal, created a few chances and defended for our lives.

But as it stands, our attack is toothless and our soft core was exposed by Leicester on Sunday. Bruce may have more points than Rafa Benitez did at this stage, but you’ve got to look where those points have came from.

The worse Tottenham get, the less impressive that win gets for Bruce. However, the fact we’re still talking about that results speaks volumes.
