Newcastle United look to have made a huge error of judgement over Fikayo Tomori.
The Magpies reportedly wanted to land the centre-back on loan during the January transfer window, with The Northern Echo claiming there was even contact between the two clubs.
Tomori was out of the starting XI at Chelsea under Frank Lampard, and was there for the taking.
Newcastle ultimately failed to push hard enough, and he duly headed to AC Milan, where he has, of course, been outstanding.
Tomori has made 12 appearances for the Rossoneri so far and wowed whenever he’s taken to the field.
Recent results have not been perfect, but the 23-year-old hasn’t let his personal form drop.
It is now being reported that AC Milan want to make his loan move permanent (Goal), and are ready to spend £26 million to get their man.
Newcastle will regret not pushing harder
It felt like it was going to be an oversight when it first became apparent Newcastle wouldn’t be getting Tomori.
Now that is already proving to be the case.
That the Italian giants feel compelled to spend such an amount tells you all you need to know.
Tomori is a fantastic defender who has pace, strength and can pass out from the back, and would have been a cracking addition for the Magpies.
There’s every chance he’ll turn out to be an uncomfortable watch for Toon supporters, and he’s still a number of years away from his peak.
