Four games in and four points on the board for the Magpies. It’s been an interesting start to the season for Steve Bruce’s side.
There was the narrow defeat against Arsenal which will be remembered for the tactical disaster in the second half. We got pumped off newly promoted Norwich City. We put in a monumental performance to beat Tottenham away from home. And finally there was the draw with Watford which really should’ve been a win.
But what have we learned so far? Well based on the three goals we’ve scored, we are more than capable of playing nice football.

If you go back and watch each of the three goals we’ve scored so far, the way we move the ball around has been pretty impressive.
Longstaff’s turn and pass at Norwich was sublime. The way we controlled the ball at Tottenham, moved it from right to left with pace and precision before Christian Atsu’s delicate chip into Joelinton was a near perfect goal.
Then against Watford, the move started with Joelinton holding it up deep in his own half then releasing Fabian Schar. His burst got us up the pitch, before Atsu and Joelinton combined to find Emil Krafth out wide. His cross was knocked down by Isaac Hayden into Schar’s path, who tucked home the equaliser.

Looking back, three very nice Newcastle goals. We’ve shown we’ve got the ability on the ball to use it properly and create openings. The big issue is how many openings we’re creating.
We dominated large parts of the game against Watford but were often unable to carve out a chance. Too often we were slow on the ball, allowing the Hornets to get into their shape and be tough to break down.

But when we move it quickly, like at Tottenham, we’ve proven we can be an attacking force.
There is still a lot of work to be done, but there are promising signs in black and white. It remains a work in progress.
