Newcastle United could be about to lose a player who has featured very heavily for them this season, but it is for the best.
Newcastle are really struggling financially at the minute and it’s unclear how much they are going to have to spend this summer, so they are more than likely exploring every option available which they could sell.
A report from the Sunday Mirror (print edition, page 66, 17th March 2024) claims that Sean Longstaff is now a target for Leeds, but they would only be signing him should they win promotion to the Premier League.
Longstaff’s £15m sale would open so many doors for Newcastle
Longstaff has been one of the few success stories of Newcastle’s academy in the last few years having risen through the ranks under Rafa Benitez when he first emerged as a young prospect.
Now, at 26-years-old, the midfielder is being outshone by his teammates and many fans believe the time has come to move on from him and for Eddie Howe to be a bit more ruthless if he wants to succeed with Newcastle.
Longstaff’s performances have been subpar as of late, though he is understood to be playing through an injury, and this may be the best time for Newcastle to cash in on him while they still can.
As he is an academy graduate, any money they raise through selling Longstaff would represent pure profit and do wonders for them in the transfer market, and they need every penny they can possibly find at the moment.

Longstaff will be surplus to requirements next year
Although he’s played in 36 out of a possible 41 games across all competitions this year, Longstaff’s minutes are likely to be seriously reduced next season, especially if Newcastle fail to qualify for Europe.
With the emergence of Lewis Miley, who has actually looked brighter than Longstaff in games, Newcastle now have six or seven midfield options, all of which will be wanting to play in key games.
Unfortunately for the North Shields-born player, he is very likely to be bottom of the pecking order and for someone who’s not going to have much of an impact it’s difficult to turn down £15m.
Newcastle may also be looking to add a more defensive minded midfielder on top of their options with Sandro Tonali and Joelinton set to return, and that could be the final nail in the coffin for Longstaff’s future.
