Newcastle United need to do whatever they can to ensure they are not hamstrung by PSR.
The Premier League’s spending rules have limited Newcastle United’s capacity to invest, while it also resulted in them having to cash in on Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh over the summer.
It is becoming more and more of a nuisance for Eddie Howe and co, despite Newcastle United having the richest owners in the world in PIF.
The Magpies are not a rich club, and are therefore having to think strategically in the transfer market. They cannot afford to make a mistake, and there were fears they had done just that in the summer of 2023.
However, those fears were absolutely misplaced.
Newcastle invested in the future in the summer of 2023

After qualifying for the Champions League, it was clear that Newcastle needed a sprinkling of quality to take their squad to the next level.
They did that by bringing in Sandro Tonali, while Harvey Barnes came in as a replacement for Allan Saint-Maximin. While he was not as flashy or skilful, he would provide more goals.
Newcastle’s other two summer additions in 2023 were not quite as obvious. They spent £32million on Tino Livramento, securing Kieran Trippier’s long-term replacement, despite the veteran still being at the peak of his powers.
Newcastle also brought Lewis Hall in on loan from Chelsea, with an obligation to sign him permanently for £28million the following year. Hall was another player for the future, although he had even less senior experience than Livramento. The deal to bring him to St James’ Park was a massive risk, and a transfer that was questioned throughout last season.
Newcastle were criticised for committing £60million towards two fullbacks, neither of which immediately improved Eddie Howe’s starting XI.
The photo that proves Newcastle’s investment is paying off
But while critics were thinking short-term, Newcastle were looking at the bigger picture. And it is a bigger picture that already looks incredibly bright.
In fact, a picture that Newcastle United’s official X account posted on Wednesday sums up what a masterstroke the club pulled off in 2023.
The image shows Livramento and Hall side by side, training with the England senior squad after being selected by interim boss Lee Carsley. They will hope to make their international debuts in the Nations League games against Greece and Republic of Ireland.
In Livramento and Hall, England could have their fullbacks sorted for the next 10 years. However, that will largely depend on the competition.
As for Newcastle United, their £60million gamble is going to save them so much money. In 10 years, Livramento and Hall could and should still be starters at St James’ Park. Livramento is only 22-years-old, while Hall is even younger at 20-years-old.
They have established themselves at Newcastle, so much so that they are now getting England recognition. And the exciting thing is that they are only going to get better. That is good news for England, and even better news for Newcastle United.
While Newcastle continue to navigate the muddy waters of PSR, they can be safe in the knowledge that their decision to invest in the future is paying off. They do not need to worry about splashing out on right-backs or left-backs, because they have got that position sorted for the foreseeable future.
That is summed up by the fact that Livramento and Hall are already in the England squad, less than 18 months into their Newcastle careers.
