Matt Ritchie has been out of action ever since the horror challenge in the EFL Cup game against Leicester in August, and the news seems to have got worse today.
North east reporter for the Daily Mail, Craig Hope, used his personal Twitter account to let fans know he has heard Ritchie has had to undergo a second surgery on his ankle, meaning he is out until at least January.
It is a further blow for Steve Bruce, who had hoped to have the combative wing-back back in the fold by now, particularly after he was close to a return at one stage, before aggravating the injury in training.
Ritchie has always been an important player for Newcastle, and not just because of his ‘never say die’ attitude, but also because of his vocal influence.

He would have been the ideal interim skipper in the absence of Jamaal Lascelles, with his leadership qualities, and constant motivating of teammates, exactly what a manager wants from a captain.
Ritchie could still play an important role in his absence
He may be out until next year, but he could still have an important role to play behind the scenes, as he can help the younger members of the squad while he is recuperating.

Sean Longstaff has already credited Ritchie for being a shoulder to lean on during the summer speculation surrounding his future, and if he can be similar for other members of the squad, he could still be a pivotal mentor.
He could also have a role to play in the dugout for each game, with him being one of the senior players, he could help out Bruce and the coaches with his opinion, while continuing to bark instructions to the players.
His loss cannot be over-estimated, and the sooner he gets back on the football pitch, the better chance Newcastle have of keeping clear of the relegation zone.
