Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman signed an extension to his contract at the club, before the announcement that he was on the move for a season-long loan at Swansea.
Although Toon fans may be slightly disappointed that the England under-21 keeper only added a single year to his deal, it will see him remain a Newcastle player until 2021 at least.
Newcastle will be able to monitor Woodman’s progress next season, and should he impress, he may be in line for a bumper deal afterwards, and a promotion to being main back-up to Dubravka, or even given the chance to challenge for the starting spot.
But for now, his move will benefit all parties – the player, Newcastle and Swansea.
It will be interesting to see how he handles playing on a bigger stage consistently, and will be a good gauge for his future prospects.
Swansea are sure to have lofty ambitions this season, and why automatic promotion may be beyond them, they will hope to be in the play-off race in a division that looks as wide open as it ever has.
Swansea manager will be able to nurture Woodman
The Swans are managed by former England under-17 manager Steve Cooper, and his ability to bring the best out of young players may be one of the reasons why Newcastle were happy to let Woodman develop under his guidance.
Certainly Swansea fans have been pleased with the speed the deal has been done, and are generally happy to have Woodman on board.
