Steve Bruce’s vow to analyse himself after Newcastle defeat is a waste of time

Steve Bruce has vowed to analyse himself after Newcastle’s horror showing at Leicester last weekend, but it is a pointless gesture, as the results are blatantly obvious.

He claimed to the Chronicle that it is something he always does, and if that is the case, then he seems to be about as good an analyst as he is football manager, and that is not a compliment.

He said: “I’ll analyse myself like I always do. What have I done? What have we done this week?

“We changed to a back four to see if we are not comfortable with it.

“Tactics and all this nonsense, the big thing is to have a go and show some pride.”

So let me save Bruce the time, by doing the analysing for him.

He asked what he has done? Well… picked the wrong team; chose the wrong game to change the formation; left the biggest counter-attacking threat on the bench; oversaw an absolute mauling; and had no idea how to change things when it was clearly not working in the first half.

Then he asked what he has done this week. Okay… he gave the players a day off on Monday, when he should have had them in for double sessions, which would have served two purposes.

It would have punished them for their abysmal display, and given him more time with them to work on correcting the numerous flaws.

Instead, regardless of dressing it up as being too mad to see them the next day, he appeared to reward them for such an abject performance.

Granted, that was not likely to be his reason, but it is how it comes across to the thousands of fans who have to go into work every day, whether they had a nightmare previous day, or not.

Steve Bruce’s intimation that tactics are nonsense is unacceptable

Finally, he mentions “tactics and all this nonsense”. So is he calling tactics pointless? What does he mean “all this nonsense”?

For a manager of a Premier League club to seem to intimate that tactics are “nonsense”, is frankly, gob-smacking.

How are we meant to have faith in this man, when he says such a ludicrously unacceptable thing about the fundamental aspect of football management?

Okay, he may not have meant it that way, but it is how it sounds, and does nothing to endear him to the same supporters he vowed to win over when he was appointed.

He looks more pathetic in every department with every passing game.

So Steve, let me save you a bit of time. Do not bother with your own analysis, just accept the results that you are not good enough and way out of your depth, acknowledge those facts, and resign immediately.
