Steve Bruce has sensationally resigned from his role at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Northern Echo, paving way for his installation as Newcastle manager.
The news broke this morning, after he had been expected to take training with the Owls, ahead of their friendly game against Northampton Town tomorrow.
The news was tweeted by Times football correspondent Paul Joyce, and he claims his assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence have also left.
Newcastle fans have been underwhelmed by the prospect of Bruce taking over from the beloved Rafa Benitez, but regardless of who comes in, an appointment needed to be made immediately, with little time left until the season starts.
Bruce took over at Hillsborough in February, and the club accommodated him to have extra time off before starting for family reasons.

It is quite a thank you from Bruce, as he repaid their owners’ faith and loyalty by leaving at the first sign of any interest from Newcastle.
Latest move makes Steve Bruce’s appointment at Newcastle inevitable
Fans who have said Bruce will simply be the latest ‘yes man’ to take the St James’ Park job, and this latest move by Bruce will hardly ease their fears.

To will walk out on a club after all they did for him, after just six months in the post, is less than honourable, and it suggests someone with few scruples or morals.
It would appear to be just a matter of time now, until he is unveiled as our new manager, and he will soon find out that he is stepping into a cauldron of toxicity.
He will also find out that his task of being the face of the club, and the man to bring fans back on-side, will be an impossible job.
