According to the Daily Star, Steve Bruce could recall Dwight Gayle to the starting XI on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
The forward hasn’t been seen since the 1-1 draw with Wolves, where he limped off in the 28th minute.
That was Gayle’s second start of the season, and he had actually enjoyed a bright start at Molineux. It was his neat flick that set Miguel Almiron up for the opener.
But his afternoon was cut short, and Newcastle’s attacking woes have continued to persist.
Despite a couple of goals in the cup, Joelinton is no closer to being the Premier League front man the Magpies we need.
This could force Bruce to make a big change on Saturday. The report states that Gayle could return to the side if he proves his fitness this week.
However, starting Gayle would certainly be a risk. After so long out and a season already hampered by injuries, would it be wise to throw him back into the starting XI?
We obviously need a boost up top, but starting Gayle so early after his return sounds like a risk. With his injury record, he could easily pick up another problem from returning too soon and spend another few weeks on the sidelines.
Bruce is obviously desperate to solve his side’s goalscoring woes, and Gayle might be the answer to his problems. However, that answer could disappear in an instant if he’s rushed back.
