‘Special’ 22-year-old is Newcastle’s young player of the season, former PL ace said he’s ‘incredible’

Sven Botman has to be Newcastle United’s young player of the season.

Having only arrived at St James’ Park this summer, the 22-year-old has made a sensational start to life on Tyneside. Consequently, he has been tipped as one of the Premier League’s stars of the future.

The defender joined from French side Lille in a deal worth £35m, following a long set of negotiations six months prior.

The Dutchman has since become a crucial part of Eddie Howe’s back-line, having formed a formidable partnership with Fabian Schar.

Thus far, he has made 13 Premier League appearances for the Toon. Throughout this, the youngster has averaged a strong 7.08 match rating. He leads the Magpies for offsides won and for pass success rate, which he has an 85.7% accuracy.

Having failed to secure his signature in January, Newcastle were clearly right to go back in for the centre-back over the summer.

Botman is the Toon’s young player of the season

Arriving as a youngster in the world’s biggest league, fans would not have expected Botman to settle in right away.

However, the Dutchman has exceeded all hopes, as he has made the centre-back position his own.

Since coming into the Magpies’ back-line, Newcastle have looked extremely solid with Botman at the helm.

The side have conceded just 11 goals this term, meaning they have the best defensive record in the league alongside Arsenal.

This illustrates a huge improvement in the defence when compared to last year. At this stage in the campaign, the Tyneside outfit went into the Christmas break 19th in the league table – now, they currently sit third.

The 22-year-old has received heavy plaudits since making the move to St James’ Park. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has claimed Botman is a ‘special player’; despite his age, he says he is a ‘real leader of men’.

Former Premier League stalwart Leon Osman thinks the same, having asserted the youngster has had an ‘incredible impact’ on the Newcastle team.

Therefore, with all of this said, Botman is deservedly Geordie Boot Boys’ selection for the Magpies’ young player of the season.
