Sean Longstaff’s X-rated assessment of Leicester loss shows he’s a senior Newcastle player already

Sean Longstaff pulled no punches when giving his assessment of Newcastle United’s 5-0 loss to Leicester City.

The Magpies were atrocious at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, conceding five goals for the first time since February 2016.

Longstaff had been recalled to the starting XI after an ankle injury, but didn’t do himself justice in black and white.

“It’s embarrassing. It’s f*****g embarrassing,” he told the Mirror.

“Sorry for swearing, but it is. There’s nothing else to say other than it’s embarrassing.

“As a team, that’s not good enough. You can talk about tactics, the way we were set up or how we didn’t set up. We must be much, much better and put it behind us and move on quickly. It’s a massive wake-up call. Hopefully, there’s no more days like that.”

Refreshing honesty from another Newcastle player

Tell us how you really feel, Sean…

The midfielder’s assessment of the thrashing sums up how most Toon fans were feeling on Sunday night. It was embarrassing to watch from start to finish.

Fair play to the youngster for saying it how it is. He’s already held in a high regard by supporters, but his refreshing honesty will win him even more brownie points. He certainly needs them after a grim performance at the heart of midfield.

But for Longstaff to come out and say what he did shows his seniority. As a player with limited experience, he could easily have let someone else do the talking and hid from the media. But Longstaff did the opposite, which is exactly what we want to see.

The likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Isaac Hayden stand up and face the music, and that’s exactly what Longstaff has done.

Hopefully his words aren’t hollow. We’ll see on Sunday when we face Manchester United.

The players have a lot of wrongs to put right. It’s up to them to stand up and be counted. If we see a repeat performance, the atmosphere inside St James’ Park will be poisonous.
