There has been much speculation over the Newcastle future of Sean Longstaff, with Manchester United conitnually being linked with a move for the youngster.

But Sky Sports revealed today that Steve Bruce is to sit down with the midfielder, and assure him he is an integral part of his plans at St James’ Park.

They also claim the player is “excited at the prospect of Bruce taking charge” and is “desperate to impress the new manager”.

It does say that he would be keen to speak to the Old Trafford club if the clubs agreed a fee, but crucially adds “Longstaff is not pushing for a move”.

That is a sensible outlook from the local lad. It is one thing to say you want to talk to a club if a deal is in the offing, and another thing completely to demand to speak to them come what may.

Newcastle should continue to resist overtures from Old Trafford

It will be a blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who seems to have made a point of making his interest in the Newcastle man as public as possible, likely in the hope of turning the player’s head.

But Newcastle do not want to sell – as the Sky report states – and it is safe to assume that unless a ridiculous £50 million-plus bid is submitted, he will be a Newcastle player next season.

If the club did receive a bid of that amount, then equally, fans would surely agree that it would be too good to turn down, considering Longstaff has only made a handful of appearances.

But let’s hope there is no decision to be made, and that Longstaff will stay, and sign a new deal that will tie him down at Newcastle for the bulk of his peak years.
