Newcastle’s reported target Jarrod Bowen looks set to be offered a new and improved long-term contract at Hull City, according to the HullLive website.

The winger is one of the names mentioned as a January signing at St James’ Park, as Steve Bruce tries to address the club’s failure to strengthen the attacking options on the right flank in the summer.

Bowen, who was named in the Championship team of the season at the end of the last campaign, is said to be on a current contract that sees him on a salary “below the average earner” at Hull, the regional newspaper’s website said this week.

They also added: “I’d fully expect City to come up with an improved offer soon but it’s far from guaranteed Bowen will be happy to sign it.

“He wants to play in the Premier League and would he really have anything to gain by signing a new long-term deal with City?”

The news of an improved deal for the young starlet seemed to be confirmed by Hull manager Grant McCann, who said he is “sure the club will sit down with Jarrod and put something to him”.

The player is approaching the final year of his current deal, but Hull do have an option to trigger a one year extension. Should they choose to activate it, Bowen would effectively be tied to the club until 2021.

The door has been left open for a Newcastle move

But the likelihood is that a new deal will be offered, and if the player is reluctant to commit, the club will try to cash in on their asset, and get the best price possible for him.

And McCann left the door open for interested clubs, when he added: “At the end of the day he’s a Hull City player this year and next. It’s down to Jarrod to sit down with the football club and arrange a new deal for himself.

“To be honest with you, I don’t think the club would ever stand in Jarrod’s way if a bigger club came in with the right value that the club want. We’ll see how those conversations go.”

Southampton have also been credited with an interest, and if there are multiple clubs looking to sign the prospect, Newcastle, and Lee Charnley, will not be able to play their usual game of low-balling offers to extract a cheap deal.

Should he try to do that, he will almost certainly miss out on the player to a club that sees the qualities Bowen has and are willing to pay the asking price to secure his signature.

Newcastle need to make sure, if their interest is genuine, that they move swiftly and get a deal done, because players like Bowen do not become available every day.
