Reported Newcastle target Jarrod Bowen has been offered a new contract at the Championship club, according to Hull Live, in a bid to fend off interest in their star man.

If he signed a new deal, it could be a blow to Newcastle’s hopes of landing the 22-year-old prospect, who would be the ideal signing to solve our right-wing problem.

The report claims the new, improved deal would see the player tied to the club until 2022, which they hope will be enough time for the player to realise his Premier League aspirations with the Tigers.

But there is still hope for Newcastle, and other potentially interested clubs, with it by no means certain the player will commit his long-term future to his current club.

The report said: “The winger’s desire to play top-flight football is likely to ensure he takes time to deliberate City’s proposal but [Grant] McCann believes the chance to win promotion with the Tigers is an incentive to stay.”

Bowen is having a fantastic season so far

Bowen has been outstanding for Hull, and has undoubtedly been their top performer this season, by a distance.

He already has nine goals this term, from just 15 games, and he scored both goals in Hull’s 2-0 win over Derby in his last game. In fact, he has scored a very impressive four goals in his last three matches.

But Hull languish 13th in the Championship table, five points outside the play-off places, and while it is still relatively early days in the season, they do not really look like a side ready for a promotion push.

Whether Bowen can be convinced they have a genuine chance of reaching the top flight in the next couple of seasons, will have a major impact on his decision over the new contract.

Newcastle should press ahead with any plans they may have to pursue a deal, and hope the player mulls Hull’s offer over long enough for the January window to open before making his mind up.

If Steve Bruce can convince the player and his agents that Newcastle will pull away from any relegation worries, and assure him of his potential importance to the first-team, hopefully Bowen will see St James’ Park as the place he wants to be.
