Newcastle seem to have been linked with Hoffenheim striker Joelinton for an eternity, but Birmigham Live claims Wolves have been linked with the player, providing competition for a potential move to Tyneside.
The Brazilian striker was said to be a target in the January transfer window, but a move never materialised, and Miguel Almiron arrived instead.
But the Toon are said to be still keen, according to yesterday’s Daily Mirror, and they will not welcome the potential interest of the ambitious Midlands club.
Rafa Benitez was not keen on a deal for Joelinton, according to a snippet from the Mirror’s article, but with the Spaniard no longer at the club, and the new manager likely to have little say in targets, a move could still be on.
Convincing Joelinton may be Steve Bruce’s first task as prospective Newcastle manager
It could be that, should Steve Bruce be installed to the St James’ Park hot-seat, as seems likely, one of his first tasks could be sitting with the Brazilian and his agent and convincing him to choose us over Wolves.
Wolves have certainly made huge strides since returning to the Premier League, and Newcastle fans can only wish the club could show a fraction of their ambition.
But Newcastle is still a big draw for international players, and could yet be the preferred destination, should we make a move for the 22-year-old forward.
Certainly players need to be signed, and a striker simply must be priority number one. Time will tell if Joelinton is to be that man.
