Manchester City are about to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolves which leaves Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips potentially in a bad place.
Kalvin Phillips looks like an amazing player at Leeds United, getting himself into the England squad and then a move to Premier League champions Manchester City in a £45million deal last summer.
While Phillips now boasts an impressive medal collection, the reality is that he only played 593 minutes in all competitions for Pep Guardiola‘s side last season.
Kalvin Phillips was determined to break into Pep’s first team
His little game time suggested that he could move away this summer, but Phillips has been determined to stay put turning down the chance to move to Newcastle in favour of establishing himself in the Manchester City side.
There was a school of thought that Phillips would play a bigger role this season as Pep Guardiola can take his time to bed new players in – Jack Grealish is a prime example, he didn’t really get a regular spot in the side until his second season at City.

Now, though, Pep has moved to bring in Matheus Nunes from Wolves in a £55million deal and he plays in the same position as Phillips.
A loan move to Newcastle could be a win-win-win for all involved
Surely then, Phillips must be getting itchy feet now, and if so, Newcastle should pounce once again. A loan move would likely suit all three parties, so why not make it happen?

Newcastle are crying out for that number six, and England star Phillips would be ideal. A spell at Newcastle could do his confidence the world of good, it gets him out of Man City’s way and if there’s an option to buy in there we can keep him if he has a good season.
Surely it’s a no-brainer. I know we need another defender in as a higher priority, but I’ve always been a big admirer of Phillips and I worry that if he doesn’t get out of Man City soon his career could flatline.
