Newcastle United are reported to have triggered the extension option over defender Fabian Schar.
According to a report over the weekend from the Chronicle, the Magpies have moved to tie the Switzerland international down for a further year.
There had been some speculation that Schar, who currently sidelined with a knee injury, might be let go as a free agent this summer.
But it looks like common sense has prevailed, and Schar will be staying at St. James’ Park.
Really, Newcastle couldn’t not extend Schar’s contract.
He may no longer be the player he was under Rafa Benitez, but he’s still arguably the Magpies’ best defender on his day – although some will claim loan star Florian Lejeune takes that particular honour.
Schar has done enough to warrant another year
It has not been a good season for him, and his opportunties have been limited by injury problems and also Covid-19.
But fans will remember how good he was in his first season following his move from Deportivo La Coruna for a reported £3 million (BBC Sport).
He remains a great defender, who has that impressive ability to break the lines with a pass or dribble.
Really he’s the only centre-half at Newcastle who can do those things.
He’s also an experienced player with 54 caps for his country – it would have been bizarre to let him go for nothing.
