The January transfer window is fast approaching, and Newcastle United have a new target that hints at a change of pace for the Magpies.

It’s been a tough start to the season for Newcastle United, but things appear to be getting better after a run of three games unbeaten.

Pretend you’re Eddie Howe. Which position are you begging PIF to strengthen in January?

Is there one particular area that you really feel PIF should spend on?

One of the main issues for Eddie Howe has been the balance of his midfield. Joelinton is in poor form, and there’s talk of him being replaced.

Indeed, a new midfielder is a top priority for Newcastle, and a lot of different names have been linked with a move to Tyneside. But, the latest name is a fascinating one.

Luciano Valente latest to be linked to Newcastle United

According to a report from Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, Newcastle are now keeping an eye on Feyenoord midfielder Luciano Valente.

Reporter Jeroen Grueter claims a Newcastle scout was spotted in the stands over the weekend and was watching Valente during Feyenoord’s win over Telstar.

Grueter said: “I happened to speak with a key scout from Newcastle United yesterday, who was in Velsen-Zuid. We were chatting for a bit, and he said, ‘I really wanted to see him with my own eyes.

“Of course, there’s no guarantee he’ll immediately dominate the Premier League. I do think he scores very highly in many areas. That’s why he could become a key player at the highest level.”

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder only signed for Feyenoord this summer after coming through the ranks at Groningen, but there’s a chance the Eredivisie giants could cash in for a tidy profit in the near future.

However, Grueter suggested Feyenoord may look to improve Valente’s contract instead. He added: “It’s starting to be noticed how good he is and how well he’s performing. I think Feyenoord would be very wise to extend his contract as soon as possible and pay him a suitable salary, because they’re already considering what he might earn.”

How important is proven Premier League quality for Newcastle?

Until now, the names linked to Newcastle have all had one thing in common. Elliot Anderson. James Garner. Scott McTominay. They all have Premier League experience and pedigree.

Naturally, signing a player who is ready-made and proven at this level is a wise move. But, it’s also an expensive one. Even McTominay would cost around £50m, and that’s money that Newcastle can’t really afford to splash out given how close they are to the limits of PSR.

However, we already know Newcastle are keen to adopt a new strategy in the transfer market. Much like Chelsea, the Magpies want to find young, unearthed talent and develop them into sellable assets.

It’s low risk, high reward, and Newcastle could really benefit from that kind of long-term thinking. Look at this summer, for example; Newcastle paid big money for Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey, both of whom have failed to deliver so far.

Why not spend less on a player like Luciano Valente? There’s no guarantee that experience in the English game is the path to success, and for a fraction of the price, this young and hungry Dutch starlet could be the perfect signing for Howe.
