Anthony Gordon’s move to Liverpool did not progress despite fears he could leave, while Alexander Isak to Chelsea did not develop either due to the 24-year-old’s huge asking price.

As for Bruno Guimaraes, the expiration of his £100million release clause was a key moment in Newcastle United’s summer.

The 26-year-old is still at St James’ Park, and has more responsibility than ever. Bruno Guimaraes is now the Newcastle captain, having joined the leadership group earlier in the summer.

Keeping those three players was pivotal, but it will only get harder depending on how Newcastle perform this season. Paul Mitchell thinks Newcastle can qualify for Europe, and that is essential for the likes of Bruno to remain on Tyneside.

However, developments from Spain should certainly concern Newcastle United, as Real Madrid begin to make plans for the 2025 summer transfer window.

This summer they brought in Kylian Mbappe, and they are eyeing another huge deal in 12 months’ time.

According to AS, Real Madrid’s ‘priority target’ next summer is Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

They want the Spain international to swap the Etihad Stadium for the Santiago Bernabeu, with his Man City contract due to expire in 2027. If he does not sign an extension, next summer would be the optimum time for Man City to sell Rodri.

That could lead Manchester City to Bruno Guimaraes

On the face of it, Real Madrid trying to sign a Manchester City player should have nothing to do with Newcastle United.

However, it is what Man City could do afterwards if Rodri goes that may be of concern.

They will need to sign a new midfielder, and will need to replace arguably their most important player. That will be extremely challenging, considering how influential Rodri has become in recent years.

That could lead them to Bruno, who was a target for Pep Guardiola this summer.

While Manchester City did not want to pay Bruno’s £100million release clause, there was an appreciation that he is what they are looking for in midfield.

During the summer, the Athletic reported that Man City believe Bruno is good enough to directly replace Rodri.

That is a concern, as they might need to do that next summer if Real Madrid get their wish.

That should massively worry Newcastle United fans, as Bruno is absolutely pivotal to the PIF project at St James’ Park. He is the club’s talisman, but he is also a player who should be competing at the top of the game.

Newcastle’s venture into the Champions League was proof that Bruno can do that on Tyneside, but it cannot just be a one-off.

It is vital that Newcastle do well this season and get back into Europe, otherwise it will be extremely difficult to keep top level players like Bruno at the club. And it could be even more difficult if Man City have a Rodri shaped hole in their midfield.
