The year is 2021, and Newcastle United are linked with a move for Gael Kakuta.

According to the Daily Mail, Kakuta is a target for multiple English clubs, including the Magpies.

They’ve also linked Crystal Palace, relegated Fulham and Watford who are set to return to the Premier League.

Kakuta has had a sensational season in France. The winger is on loan at Lens, after suffering relegation with Amiens last season.

But the 29-year-old stayed in the top flight of French football, and has had the season of his life.

So far he has scored 11 goals and provided five assists.

Kakuta is set to join Lens permanently, although he may be sold on this summer.

The Daily Mail report that he could be available for £8.6million.

Kakuta will be familiar to fans of English football because of his Chelsea past.

He was highly rated at Stamford Bridge in the late 2000s, and made six Premier League appearances in total. He also had loan spells at Fulham and Bolton.

Since leaving England, Kakuta has played in France, Holland and Spain. He also spent time in the Chinese Super League.

Kakuta is playing brilliantly for Lens, who are currently sixth in Ligue 1.

However, he certainly hasn’t hit the heights expected of him when he was a Chelsea youngster.

Newcastle fans are feeling nostalgic after seeing the links with Kakuta, but a move seems unlikely.

He turns 30 this summer, and would be an expensive signing for Mike Ashley in a summer where money is set to be tight.

Surprisingly, it seems as though this is the first time that Kakuta has been linked with a move to St James’ Park. But that hasn’t stopped Newcastle fans feeling like they’ve gone back in time.
