Newcastle United have struggled to score goals, amongst many other issues, in 2020/21.
The Magpies have bagged just 28 goals in their 28 Premier League games so far – only four teams in the division have scored fewer.
10 of those have come from injured star Callum Wilson, who has not had an awful lot of support.
The alternative options for Steve Bruce – Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Joelinton – have scored just five goals between them this term.
It is a remarkably poor return from three big-earning players, and many Newcastle fans have criticised them for not pulling their weight.
It is such a low output from the trio, that even former Magpies striker Joselu has more than them combined so far in 2020/21.
The Spaniard was an absolutely atrocious signing for Newcastle, and in two years he managed just seven goals in 52 games for the club before being sold for a reported £2.5 million (Chronicle).
Joselu notched his seventh goal of the season for Deportivo Alaves against Cadiz CF yesterday, meaning his clear of Newcastle’s three back-up strikers by two.
A terrible reflection on Bruce and his backups
That Joselu’s tally of seven goals for Alaves is enough to mean he’s outscored three Newcastle strikers is shocking.
Gayle has had some injury problems, but all three have had enough time on the pitch to have contributed more in the way of goals than they actually have, especially Joelinton.
It also further suggests that Bruce simply doesn’t have it in him to construct a side that has more possession, creates chances, plays attacking football and scores goals.
