Newcastle target Granit Xhaka made his return to the Arsenal starting lineup on Thursday, having been left out of the side since falling out with fans a few weeks ago.

He played the full 90 minutes of the Europa League game against Eintracht Frankfurt, but on the final whistle, he has once again upset Gunners fans.

As he was shaking hands with the opposition players, he was pictured smiling, laughing and hugging some of the Frankfurt players, which led some Arsenal fans to launch a tirade against him on social media.

Unai Emery announced last week that he had held clear the air talks with Xhaka, and said he expected the Swiss midfielder to be at Arsenal for the long-term. However, Emery won’t be there for the long-term himself after receiving his P45.

But it seems whatever the player does now is going to be under the microscope of Arsenal’s fan-base, and once it gets to this stage, it seems the situation has become untenable.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a loan move for Xhaka in January, with one report even going as far as to say Steve Bruce had asked Fabian Schar to try to convince the player that Tyneside would be the ideal place for him.

Bruce is thought to prioritise a midfielder over a striker

Reports do claim Bruce is prioritising a midfielder over a striker in the January window, and there is little doubt that Xhaka would be an improvement on Jonjo Shelvey, who has flattered to deceive in recent times.

But for now Xhaka remains an Arsenal player, but for how much longer, in light of the latest fan reaction, remains to be seen.

Here are some of the comments from angry Gunners fans, which could eventually help see the player end up on Tyneside in the new year:
