Newcastle should target Milan midfielder Franck Kessie if they lose out to the Italian side in the chase for Arsenal’s disgruntled Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka in January.

Wolves were reportedly interested in signing the Ivory Coast international, but a January move for the player is now said to be “unlikely”, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Newcastle should take advantage of Wolves’ reluctance to make a bid for the midfielder, with Kessie perhaps being the current player to make way in the Milan side, should Xhaka opt for Italy over Tyneside.

The Serie A side are thought to be leading the chase for the Gunners’ star, which would make a Newcastle move for Kessie a logical one.

In fact, the Ivorian star could be a better signing than Xhaka, particularly given the fact he is just 22-years-old, and as such, fits into Mike Ashley’s preferred transfer blueprint.

Remarkably, Kessie has made 27 appearances for the Ivory Coast national side, despite his young age, having made his debut at a mere 17.

He has featured heavily for Milan so far this season, despite reports in September claiming the San Siro club were looking to offload the player.

Newcastle should look at a loan deal for Kessie with an option to buy

He is thought to be valued at around £25 million, but there would surely be a good chance that Newcastle could look to do a loan deal, with an option to buy, should they make a move for him in January.

Steve Bruce is said to be in the market for another midfield addition during the winter transfer window, with him thought to have received encouragement over a move for Xhaka.

So if Bruce would look at Kessie as that quality player to add to the squad instead, it could be that Xhaka could has an influential role in Newcastle’s transfer business, one way or another.
