Over the weekend, Steve Bruce suggested that he’s happy with his striker options and wouldn’t be pursuing another this summer.
The manager spoke of his desire to keep Dwight Gayle, but he’s since been linked with a move away.

Newcastle had been linked with a move for free agent Andy Carroll, but the Mirror reported that our striker stance means that a move for the former number nine is off the table. But could he be an option once again if Gayle leaves?
We haven’t seen Gayle at all during pre-season due to injury. It’s surprising that he’s actually still at the club. He was sensational last season in the Championship, so it’s no wonder the likes of Leeds, West Brom and Stoke want him to drop down again.
And we should let him. Gayle isn’t a proven Premier League goalscorer.

And his attitude is hardly exemplary. The Telegraph report that he was unhappy at losing his number nine shirt to new signing Joelinton, but what did he expect?
If he understood the significance of the shirt, he’d know it was never going to be handed back to him just because it was his a couple of seasons ago.

We should let Gayle go, and turn back to Carroll. He’ll want to play for the club no matter what number is on his back. He’s got unfinished business.
And it’s a deal that won’t need to be rushed as he’s a free agent and can be signed outside of the transfer window. This will mean there’s no panic if Gayle departs on deadline day.
