They state that Sheffield United, Brighton and Aston Villa are also keen, with the Norwegian midfielder interested in playing in the Premier League.
So if those clubs think they can sign Berge, why not Newcastle? Bleacher Report claim that a deal with Genk could be done for less than £20 million, which is an absolute bargain for a player of his talents.
It’s been reported that Steve Bruce wants a new centre midfielder at St James’ Park, and Berge ticks a lot of boxes.
Firstly, he’s young and can be sold for a huge fee in the future – a typical Mike Ashley signing. But not only that, he’s an exceptional player. He can do both sides of the game, just as capable at defending as he is moving the ball forwards and starting attacks.
Newcastle often struggle to keep possession, but Berge is a master at it.
He can also sniff out danger and break up attacks, reading the game brilliantly. That’s important if you’re playing for Newcastle as a lot of the time you won’t have the ball.
Berge belongs in the Champions League, and links with a move to Liverpool certainly don’t seem above his ability. But if the likes of West Ham think they can sign him, then surely Newcastle can too. Of course, there’s the lure of London life, but we can send him pictures of bridges…
Miguel Almiron changed the way Newcastle played when he arrived in January. Sander Berge could have the same impact, if not a greater one.
