One of the biggest things on the agenda this summer for Newcastle United is sealing the permanent signing of Joe Willock.
The midfielder is heading back to Arsenal after hugely successful loan spell at St. James’ Park that culminated in him equalling Alan Shearer’s club record for goals in consecutive appearances (7).
The 21-year-old was a breath of fresh air for the Magpies, and his contributions were key to the club’s Premier League survival mission.
It’s being widely reported that Newcastle will attempt to sign Willock as one of their own this summer.
But Arsenal could demand a lot of money, and one gets the feeling it’s something that could drag on all summer.
Newcastle supposedly don’t have an awful lot to spend in the upcoming window.
But there is one thing worth considering.
It’s been claimed (Chronicle) that Arsenal are actually interested in Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Swansea City.
Perhaps Newcastle can use that reported interest to their advantage.
Woodman plus cash?
If it gets to the point where Arsenal are demanding too much for Willock, Newcastle should not rule out using Woodman if the Gunners do indeed have an interest in the 23-year-old.
It makes sense that they would – Mat Ryan is heading back to Brighton after his loan, and Alex Runarsson isn’t Premier League standard.
Woodman has enjoyed a brilliant 2020/21, and should have good value given he signed a new contract last season.
There are a lot of stipulations, including Swansea possibly making a transfer offer for Woodman, but it’s something that could be worth exploring.
