Newcastle United are currently looking good to retain their Premier League status at the end of the season.

The Magpies have been in fantastic form of late, and have won four of their last five matches.

Eddie Howe has prompted a big response from his players, and the new signings have all played their part.

Dan Burn has been really good.

The pressure is on him, as the only new centre-back signed in January, to really keep things tight at the back.

So far, he has risen to the challenge, and hopefully he can keep this high level until the end of the season.

If Newcastle can survive, it’s going to be very exciting to see who the new owners go after in the transfer market.

It is looking as though Sven Botman will once again be a target for the club, with Amanda Staveley recently claiming he still wants to come.

But maybe Newcastle ought to also look a little closer to home.

Mohammed Salisu was also linked with a move to Newcastle recently, with 90min reporting the Saints’ own change of ownership was the only reason a move didn’t materialise. Apparently Newcastle had held talks with the player ahead of a potential £40 million+ move.

Salisu has been having a brilliant campaign.

The Ghanaian caught the eye of Alan Shearer this weekend with his performance against Norwich City.

He said of him (via official Premier League): “Rock-solid again for Southampton, the centre-back didn’t give the Norwich attack a look-in.”

Mohammed Salisu would be a great addition this summer for Newcastle

Salisu is into his second season now at Southampton, and he is looking the real deal.

He’s physically imposing, quick across the ground and strong in the tackle. He can also play out nicely from the back.

The Saints struck gold when they signed Virgil van Dijk from Celtic in 2015. It’s possible Salisu could be the Dutchman’s heir.

It is understandable that Southampton’s new owner didn’t want to lose Salisu mid-season. Back in January, Southampton were struggling and needed to keep hold of their key players.

In the summer, if Newcastle survive, then they should definitely be looking at moving for Salisu again.
