Jamal Lewis has had a tough start to life at Newcastle United.

He cost £15million from relegated Norwich last season, and seemed like an astute signing.

Sadly though, things aren’t quite going to plan.

At Norwich, it was very clear that for all his potential, Lewis needed to improve defensively. That hasn’t happened at all under Steve Bruce.

Lewis’ defensive deficiencies were exposed yet again at Stamford Bridge. The youngster was at fault for Chelsea’s second, falling asleep at the back post to ensure Timo Werner ended his goal drought.

The defensive lapses have been there all season, and his confidence continues to suffer.

Clearly Bruce, a former Premier League-winning defender, isn’t capable of helping Lewis improve. And as we sleepwalk towards relegation, we can’t afford to give away cheap goals.

Dependable Dummett

Next up for Newcastle United is a trip to Old Trafford, and another game that makes you expect the worst.

The Magpies must be solid at the back, and at the minute we can’t rely on Lewis.

Therefore, Bruce must turn to Paul Dummett.

The local lad was last seen coming off the bench against Southampton, and put in a heroic performance to secure three points.

Offensively, he doesn’t bring much to the party. By the time Dummett has set himself to whip in a cross, the opposition have finished making their sandwiches and are half way up the pitch on the counter.

But as an out-and-out defender, Dummett is rock solid. The 29-year-old can sniff out danger and is great in one-on-one situations, which is where Lewis has struggled.

If results go against us, we could be just one point clear of the relegation zone by the time we kick off on Sunday night.

We can’t afford to give away cheap goals at Old Trafford. We need players we can rely on, and that’s why Paul Dummett should start over Jamal Lewis.
