Newcastle need a striker this month, but that doesn’t mean they should just sign one for the sake of it.
Every forward under the sun has been linked with the Magpies so far, including Everton’s Cenk Tosun. The Daily Mail reported the other day that Newcastle could enter the race for the Turkish forward, who is also a loan target for Crystal Palace.
Whether Newcastle actually are interested or not remains to be seen, but the fact is they shouldn’t be.
According to the Telegraph, Steve Bruce only wants to sign players who are good enough for the first team. Based on that, we shouldn’t even look at Tosun.
He cost Everton £27 million in January 2018, and what a waste of money he’s been. Tasked with filling the gaping hole left by Romelu Lukaku, Tosun has so far managed just nine Premier League goals in 41 games.
Despite playing under multiple managers, Tosun hasn’t been able to command a place in the starting XI, often sitting on the bench while the formerly goal shy Dominic Calvert-Lewin took his place.
While Bruce needs a striker to take the pressure off of Joelinton, we don’t need another player who is massively out of form. That’s what happened in 2018 when an injured Islam Slimani turned up on loan.
Based on reports, Crystal Palace seem the favourites to land Tosun. According to Sky Sports (live blog, 3:43pm), the Eagles are in talks about a loan move. They’re welcome to him.
