Matty Longstaff isn’t the only youngster who could leave for nothing this summer. Dan Barlaser’s contract is also set to expire, with the 22-year-old yet to truly make his mark at Newcastle.
The midfielder is currently on loan at Rotherham United, playing a key in role in their promotion charge. The Millers are top of League One, with Barlaser being hailed as one of their most important players.
According to the Daily Mail, four Championship sides are interested in signing the youngster for nothing at the end of the season.
But does he deserve a chance at Newcastle? Well we should certainly take a look.
12 months ago, Sean Longstaff was only just breaking into the Newcastle first-team. Before that there was talk of him going out on loan, showing no real signs of becoming a senior player. But a chance came his way, and he grabbed it with both hands.
Could the same happen with Barlaser? It’s certainly worth trying to find out. Some footballers are late bloomers, so Barlaser’s age shouldn’t put the decision makers off. Just because he hasn’t made it at 22 doesn’t mean he’s not going to at all.
He’s made three senior appearances for the Magpies, all coming in the cups during the 2016/17 season.
Rather than sell themselves short and lose him for nothing, Newcastle must hand Barlaser a new contract. If he goes for nothing and impresses elsewhere, we would look mightily foolish.
