Why Newcastle have got it right by loaning rather than buying

Newcastle United are set to add Islam Slimani and Martin Dubravka on loan, as well as already bringing in Kenedy from Chelsea until the end of the season.

It has been a frantic end to the transfer window for Newcastle, but it looks like they are set to add two players to their squad on deadline day.

Things looked bleak early on as it seemed like it was going to be another case of ‘we tried’ after another disappointing final day in the transfer window, but Rafa Benitez appears to have secured two of his targets, albeit on loan.

That means all three of Newcastle’s January signings are only on deals until the end of the season, but is this actually a good thing?

Islam Slimani’s price and age means a loan deal has to be considered the best outcome for the club, as there is no guarantees that the Algerian will add the goals the Magpies need.

As for Dubravka, his lack of experience in England means we have no idea how he will perform, therefore a loan deal gives us some security if the Slovakian turns out to be a flop.

Kenedy is also unproven, but with Christian Atsu we have shown that Chelsea loan players do potentially have a future at St James’ Park, providing the Brazilian does not perform so good that Chelsea want him back!

If by chance we have been taken over in the summer and there is money to spend, then our three loan signings might not be considered as players Benitez wants, with more money available to bring in higher quality players.

The club’s goals are short term right now: Stay in the Premier League. Newcastle have brought in three short term fixes and can then reassess their situation in the summer, when Newcastle will either be a Premier League club with new investors, a Premier League club still with Mike Ashley at the helm, or a Championship club with a bleak future on the horizon.
