Friday morning brought news of new contracts at Newcastle.
The club have confirmed that Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie have extended their stay with the Magpies. Both players now have deals up to the summer of 2023.
The contract extensions had been reported for a while, but it’s good to see two key players commit their future to the club.
While inconsistent, Shelvey can be our most important player on his day. His passing range is second to none, and we really missed him during his absence.
As for Ritchie, he’s important for different reasons. The 30-year-old is a leader and an integral member of the squad.
But following the announcement, some fans have sent a clear message to the club – sign up Matty Longstaff!
The youngster’s deal is set to end this summer, and losing a player of his potential for nothing would be scandalous.
And as the clock ticks down, the more fans worry that Longstaff won’t be hanging around.
Steve Bruce mentioned the contract saga in his pre-match press conference, telling the Chronicle: “Matty we all know what I think of him, I gave him his debut.
“We are hoping we can get something sorted. We still have a few weeks and months.”
Newcastle also need to sort out the futures of Federico Fernandez and Javi Manquillo. They could also leave for free this summer, despite having excellent seasons under Bruce.
But as it stands, the one deal fans are desperate for is Matty Longstaff.

Glad to see Shelvey’s contract extended especially. Matty Longstaff and Manquillo should be the next priority.
