The big talking point from Saturday’s game, other than the awful football, was the return of Andy Carroll.

The local hero returned home against Brighton, making his second debut for the Magpies off the bench. Before the game, his name was greeted with cheers as he was announced as a substitute. Every time he came out to warm up, fans were on their feet. And when he finally came on late in the day, the roof nearly came off St James’ Park.

But his homecoming was no fairy tale, as Carroll was unable to inspire his side to victory. Instead, they limped to an undeserved draw.

Seeing Carroll back on the pitch was a big moment though, especially for a player with his injury woes. However, there’s bad news.

According to the Telegraph, there are concerns that the 30-year-old won’t be fit to actually start a game until next year. One the face of it, this is a massive blow. But deep down, does it really matter?

As a lot of fans have pointed out, we only need him to come on late in the game and give us a boost. Supporters weren’t expecting him to be the main man up front. That’s always going to be Joelinton.

Carroll’s job is to improve the young lads around him and have an impact off the bench. As long as he’s fit enough to play 20 minutes a week, then that’s alright. There are bigger issues right now than Carroll’s match fitness.
