Federico Fernandez has been one of Newcastle’s best players this season.
However, he might not be a Magpie for much longer.
The centre-back’s contract expires this summer, and Keith Downie has provided a rather worrying update about his future.
The Sky Sports reporter spoke to Fernandez and Miguel Almiron, with the former admitting he is yet to hold contract talks with the club.
Had a chat with Newcastle’s South American pair Federico Fernández & Miguel Almiron this lunchtime. Defender Fernández revealed he’s yet to hold any talks with the club about a new contract. His current deal is of course up in the summer #NUFC

Fernandez joined Newcastle in 2018, and has proven to be an excellent acquisition.
However, his age might see his Magpies career come to an end this summer.
Newcastle rarely hand out new deals to ageing players, with Fernandez turning 31 last week.

But his age should be irrelevant. The Argentine has been sensational this season, and a lot more impressive than some of his teammates.
That likely won’t matter though.
If Newcastle do plan to keep him, they’re leaving it late. Clubs in Europe can already approach Fernandez, and they would be getting one hell of a player.
Newcastle’s loss will be someone else’s gain. But as long as Mike Ashley calls the shots, players like Fernandez will be judged on their age rather than their ability.

Newcastle fans want Fernandez to stay
Is there anything this club does which isn’t last minute slapdashery? Lee Charnley seems the kind of bloke who’d sleep in till about lunchtime so that may explain why #NUFC

Been consistently one of the top performers in the team since last season and we haven’t even thought about getting him tied down?

What a bloody mess of a club,run by…………!

Course they won’t offer him a new deal, he doesn’t have much sell on value, the club don’t care how good or vital a player is he’s just a pound sign to them. That’s our club not a competitive football club but a money making business #Nufc

Of course not, they’ll let him go for free. Loan a 20 year old with option to buy.

Crazy Keith that we went tying down fede, he’s for me our best defender, superior on every level to someone like lascelles

We are in one hell of a mess. I can only hope a takeover does happen and the new owners take the club by the scruff of the neck and sort it out. I fear badly if Ashley remains
